A damaged or weakened tooth can affect the way you eat, speak, and smile. When a large cavity, crack, fracture, or previous dental work leaves a tooth needing more support than a filling can provide, a dental crown restores its shape, strength, and function.
At MacArthur Dental Arts in Irvine, CA, we design each crown to protect a compromised tooth while blending naturally with the rest of your smile, and many crowns can be completed in-house with our CEREC® technology.
Your dentist will evaluate how much healthy tooth structure remains, the tooth's location, and your bite before recommending a crown.
Your dentist prepares the tooth to make room for the restoration, then designs your crown to fit precisely and match your surrounding teeth. With in-house CEREC® technology, many crowns can be designed, fabricated, and placed in a single visit, no temporary crown or second appointment required. Once your dentist confirms the fit, appearance, and bite, the crown is securely bonded into place.
A crowned tooth still needs regular care. Brush twice daily, floss around the crown and surrounding teeth, and avoid chewing ice or hard objects that could damage the restoration. Routine dental visits let your dentist monitor the crown and the health of the tooth underneath it.
What is a dental crown?
A dental crown is a custom restoration that covers the visible portion of a damaged or weakened tooth to restore its shape, strength, and function.
Does MacArthur Dental Arts offer CEREC® crowns?
Yes, CEREC® technology is available in-house for appropriate cases, allowing many crowns to be designed and placed in a single visit.
Will my crown match my other teeth?
Yes. Every crown is custom-shaded and shaped to blend naturally with your surrounding teeth.
How long does a dental crown last?
With proper care, a crown can provide long-term service, though its lifespan depends on oral hygiene, bite forces, and everyday habits.
Will I need a crown after a root canal?
Often, yes, especially for back teeth that handle heavy chewing forces. Your dentist will evaluate the tooth and let you know if a crown is recommended.
If you have a damaged, cracked, or weakened tooth, contact MacArthur Dental Arts at (949) 251-8544 to find out whether a dental crown is right for you.
