A Cone Beam CT (CBCT) scan creates a detailed 3D view of your teeth, jawbone, sinuses, and airway, giving your dentist a complete picture of the anatomy that is unique to you, all in a single scan.
Traditional dental X-rays provide valuable two-dimensional images, but some situations call for a more detailed, three-dimensional view of your teeth, jawbone, and surrounding structures. A Cone Beam CT (CBCT) scanner captures that level of detail in a single scan.
At MacArthur Dental Arts in Irvine, CA, Cone Beam CT technology is part of our advanced diagnostic equipment, used when a detailed view of your oral anatomy is clinically helpful.
Because CBCT produces a 3D dataset rather than a flat image, it can give your dentist a more complete picture when conventional imaging or a clinical exam alone doesn't provide enough information.
CBCT isn't needed for every visit, but it can be a valuable tool for planning dental implants, evaluating complex dental problems, assessing certain dental emergencies, and supporting treatment planning that requires a complete understanding of your anatomy. Your dentist will determine when the additional detail is clinically justified.
Does a Cone Beam CT scan hurt?
No. A CBCT scan is noninvasive and doesn't cause pain, you'll simply need to stay still for a short time while the scanner rotates around the area being imaged.
How long does a Cone Beam CT scan take?
The scan itself is generally completed quickly. The exact time depends on the area being imaged and the type of exam.
Is CBCT better than a regular dental X-ray?
Not necessarily, each type of imaging serves a different purpose. CBCT provides detailed 3D information for cases where that extra detail is clinically useful, while conventional X-rays remain appropriate for many routine evaluations.
Do I need a CBCT scan for dental implants?
Some implant cases benefit from 3D imaging, but not every patient requires it. Your dentist will determine the appropriate imaging based on your anatomy and treatment plan.
